Hello world! – WASH Innovation Challenge

challenge topics

Innovative behaviour change campaign

Objective: To develop innovative behaviour change campaigns promoting hand washing with soap during critical times by mothers and caregivers, tailored to local contexts and issues.

Target Audience: Mothers and caregivers

Behavior Change Campaigns

How might we nudge mothers and caregivers in South Asia into changing their behaviour to always wash their hands with soap at critical times?

Busy with responsibilities, mothers and caregivers may forget to wash their hands during critical times such as: before preparing food, before feeding their child, after defecation, and after they change their baby’s nappy. This behaviour change campaign could offer environmental cues (for example: visuals or sounds) to significantly encourage hand washing with soap among mothers and caregivers.

Appropriate technology for fun and easier hand washing

Objective: To develop appropriate technologies to make hand washing with soap easier and more fun for mothers and caregivers during critical times.

Target Audience: Mothers and caregivers

Appropriate Technology:

How might we develop a technology that will make hand washing easier and more fun for the mothers and caregivers during critical times?

This technology can take many forms - be it mobile application, sensor, device or physical setup. We are betting on your creative thinking and tech savviness to come up with technology-driven solutions that will effectively improve the hand washing behaviour of mothers and caregivers in South Asia.

Innovative systems to sustainably monitor hand washing

Objective: To develop innovative systems to measure and monitor hand washing at homes, in schools and health centres in a sustainable way.

Target Audience: Members of the family, school students, patients and visitors in health centers

Innovative Monitoring Systems: How might we monitor and measure hand washing practices within homes, schools and health centres?

A monitoring and measuring system would allow us to understand whether hand washing with soap is actually being practiced or not. This system could focus on a specific audience such as children at schools or doctors at health centres, or target public places in general.
